The Research-Creation Triennale of the Université de Montréal is a joint initiative of the Université de Montréal Gallery and the Innovation Laboratory of the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research, Discovery, Creation, and Innovation. This large-scale event, running from March 20 to June 14, 2025, aims to showcase to both the university community and the general public the various forms that research-creation can take at the Université de Montréal.
The Pocket OpeRA project, directed by Ana Sokolović, Olivier Asselin, and Marie-Josèphe Vallée, was selected to be presented at the first edition of this triennale, which seeks to highlight research-creation rooted at the Université de Montréal. In this context, the documentary Nipi Ishkueu, co-produced by the Canada Research Chair in Operat Creation and Wapikoni Mobile, will premiere on June 11, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Humanities and Social Sciences Library of the Université de Montréal. The film documents the research-creation work carried out by the Indigenous creative team behind the augmented reality opera Nipi Ishkueu. A roundtable discussion with members of the Pocket OpeRA project, partners, and filmmaker Jack Belhumeur will follow the screening, focusing on the research-creation process for this opera from a perspective of democratizing the genre. In addition, members of all the creative teams will organize a tablet demonstration of the five augmented reality operas on June 12 starting at 3:00 p.m. in the foyer of the Claude-Champagne Hall at the Faculty of Music.
