For the third consecutive year, the Canada Research Chair in Opera Creation organized an intensive two-week seminar focused on co-creation practices through an interdisciplinary approach combining opera creation and street arts. This research-creation workshop was led by composer Ana Sokolović, choreographer Sarah Bild, musicologist and Scientific Director of the Chair Zoey Cochran, and stage director Martin Genest.

For the second year in a row, the Canada Research Chair in Opera Creation has organized an interdisciplinary research-creation seminar on the art of the clown in opera at Orford Musique. Led by Ana Sokolović, composer and holder of the Research Chair, this seminar brought together a team of renowned coaches and professors, including choreographer Sarah Bild, director and puppeteer Martin Genest, director of the French playwriting program at NTS Diane Pavlović, bouffon teacher Massimo Agostinelli, puppeteer Caroline Tanguay, clown Véronika Makdissi-Warren, as well as postdoctoral researchers Patrick Giguère and Kit Soden.

Interdisciplinary seminar in opera creation and music composition for the stage

Fall 2021 - Winter 2022

Pedagogical activity

As part of this seminar, we began creating four five-minute operas designed to be performed online. They were created by four interdisciplinary groups of graduate students in composition, literature and/or theater, film and set design. Each team made its own individual creative choices with the support of the research team, but the creative work was also carried out through co-creation workshops bringing together all teams and guest artists.
